|The castle of Montfort, situated on the municipality of Vitrac overhangs the Dordogne and, as for the castle of Beynac, the sight is better of the very river where from we can appreciate the overhang on which stands this fortress. This magnificent castle which dominates Montfort bluff sits down literally on a rocky projection every nook of which it follows.|
It was besieged and destroyed many times. It underwent a lot of change, reconstruction and extension so much is so that the current castle is vitually a book opened over eight centuries of construction.
At the top of this rock, thus thrones the fourth reconstruction of the building. Although largely of the XIXth century, it still presents yet buildings of the XVth and XVIth centuries.
Montfort had a turbulent history, famous and bloodthirsty Cathar Lord, Bernard de Casnac, had made his den there and had sworn " to cut in fragments all the Catholics of the region ". But the life was never simple for Cathars and Casnac quickly drew the attention of the leader of the anti-cathar crusade, Simon de Montfort, who besieged and succeeded to take the castle and to run in Casnac.
There is a popular saying in the castle and thereabout which says that the daughter of Casnac was burnedto death in Montfort and that her ghost still haunts the castle.
Private property, the castle is not opened to the public.
