3 A-4 Skyhawks at MCOLF Atlantic

3 A-4 Skyhawks at MCOLF Atlantic

Atlantic was built during WW2 as a satellite airfield for MCAS Cherry Point. The Navy acquired 1,470 acres of land in early 1942, and construction commenced later that year.

The 1st aircraft reportedly arrived at Atlantic in 1943 [but that is contradicted by the 1942 photos above], the Douglas SDB Dauntless dive bombers of VMSB-341, followed shortly by VMSB-342.

The most severe bombing of Sofia ever occurred on March 30, 1944. Some 370 american heavy bombers flied upon Sofia destroying 3575 buildings. Before and after aerial photos of the bombing of Wilhelmshaven

Before and after aerial photos of the bombing of Wilhelmshaven

The German port city of Wilhelmshaven was bombed twice in 1943 -- once by the USAAF on January 27, and again by the RAF Bomber Command on February 11-12. These aerial reconnaissance images show Wilhelmshaven before and after the two bombings. The second bombing, carried out at night, was especially challenging because of dense cloud cover. Planes equipped with the RAF's newly developed H2S grou...

Muenster bomb strike, 11-12 June 1943

Muenster bomb strike, 11-12 June 1943

72 aircraft - 29 Lancasters, 22 Halifaxes, 21 Stirlings - were dispatched on an interesting raid. All the aircraft were provided by No 8 Group and it was really a mass H2S trial. 33 of the aircraft carried markers or flares, the remaining aircraft acting as the bombing force, although the marker aircraft also bombed. The marking and bombing were very accurate and the whole raid lasted less than...

Kiel, 14.05 1943 Bombing Raid

Kiel, 14.05 1943 Bombing Raid

Mission #35 of the 303rd BG

Group aircraft flew in perfect formation to drop 61 1/2 tons of 500-lb. bombs on the target. The Germans made an attempt to conceal the target by the use of a smoke screen, but it proved to be ineffectual. Flak over the target at the 25,000 ft. bombing altitude was moderate and very little evasive action was necessary to avoid the bursts. Enemy air op...

V1 launching site at Yvrench, France

V1 launching site at Yvrench, France

A few weeks after the Peenemunde raid, on November 9th 1943, a "suspicious erection" was noticed on a set of reconnaissance photos at Bois Carr, near Yvrench in France. This was the first V1 launching site to be analysed. It shows the long, low building of heavy concrete (christened a "ski site") which was used for the storage of flying bomb components. Within a few weeks, s...

Lorient submarine pens

Lorient submarine pens

Lorient housed a German submarine base during World War II; although the city was heavily damaged by Allied bombing raids, the base survived through the end of the war. As they could not destroy the base itself, the Allies decided to bomb the city, on purpose, to cut the supplying of the U-Boats. Without gasoline, food, or water it became impossible for these submarines to return to the Atlanti...
