A powerful typhoon pummeled southern China on Thursday, killing at least eight people and leaving 27 Vietnamese fishermen missing after their boats sank in Chinese waters.

Typhoon Chanchu — the most severe storm to strike the South China Sea region during the month of May — has killed at least 48 people in Asia, including 37 in the Philippines last weekend.

With a maximum displacement of 33,800 tons, the Typhoons are the largest class of submarine ever built.

Just weeks after taking a beating from Typhoon Man-Yi in mid-July 2007, Japan’s southern islands were visited by Typhoon Usagi in early August. Although not as strong as Man-Yi, Usagi still forced the region to cancel air traffic and ferry services, and it left tens of thousand of homes without power, said news reports.

The Shorts was inside a hangar at Guam when typhoon "Pongsona" hit. It was blown into the wall and the fuselage was ripped open aft of the cockpit. It was seen at Guam in 2005, being used for spares.
