port kembla stack

port kembla stack

A tall copper smelter stack dominates the Port Kembla skyline. When the old copper smelter closed a few years ago, the local community breathed a sigh of relief. Bad practices, including the smelting of scrap copper, plastic coatings and all, had meant that the emissions from the stack were particularly noxious. Residents had suffered the health effects for years but because it is a working cla...

Old Smokey

Old Smokey

At 380 metres this smoke stack is one of the tallest in the world. Unfortunatly, because of its hight, the range increases for acid rain.

The nickel mine at Sudbury is also one of the worlds largest.

Concrete Outline of the USS South Dakota

Concrete Outline of the USS South Dakota

When they scrapped USS South Dakota in 1962, Sioux Falls couldn't get the whole battleship into landlocked South Dakota. So they salvaged what parts they could, poured a foot-high concrete outline onto the ground in Sherman Park along the banks of the Big Sioux River, and combined the pieces into a minimalist pseudo-replica.

The USS South Dakota was in every major battle and the...

Piri Reis Map

Piri Reis Map

This is the Piri Reis Map drawn by Turkish captain Piri Reis in 1513. There is debate over whether the land to the south of the map is the south-east coast of South America, or if it is the north coast of Antarctica (which was covered by the snow cap around 10,000 years ago!). I'm resubmitting this hack with a smaller image. Should work this time round!
