On October 22, 2005, the Sierra Negra Volcano on Isla Isabela in the Galapagos Islands began erupting, sending ash as high as 12,800 meters (42,000 feet), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This overlay image shows a strong plume of volcanic ash and steam flowing from the Sierra Negra Volcano on Isla Isabela and blowing to the southwest over the Pacific.

Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The BTA-6 has a prime mirror diameter of 6 m and is housed in a 48 m diameter dome at an altitude of 2,070 m. Seeing first light in late 1975, it held the record for the largest telescope in the world from its completion until 1993 when it was surpassed by the Keck 1 telescope in Hawaii.

The Ryle Telescope was a linear east-west radio telescope array at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory. In 2004 three of the telescopes were moved to create a compact two-dimensional array of telescopes at the east end of the interferometer.
