Rongbuk Monastery (at elevation 5000 meters ) is the highest monastery in the world. It is also the last inhabited spot before Everest Base Camp, about 7 km distant. From Rongbuk Monastery the huge north face of Everest is clearly seen.
Bardney Abbey in Lincolnshire, England, was a Benedictine monastery founded in 697 by King ∆thelred of Mercia, who was to become the first abbot. The monastery is supposed to have been destroyed during a Danish raid in 870. In 1087 it was refounded as a priory, by Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln, and it regained status as an abbey in 1115.
A castle here ? No longer since that Louis XIV (the "sun king") decided to destruct this castle to conquere the city of nice in 1706. Nowdays it is a romantic parc from where you can have a view on nice town.
