Lots Road Power Station became operational in 1905 (it was claimed at that time to be the largest power station ever built) and would eventually power most of the railways and tramways in the Underground Electric Railways group (later London Underground). This is a very large coal burning power plant in eastern Kazakhstan, with what is reported to be the tallest chimney in the world (420m). There should be another station very similar nearby, called GRES-1, although I can't locate it myself. This power station is just north of the worlds largest open-cast coal mine, the Bogatyr mine.
