In March of 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima was fought between the United States and the Imperial Japan. After Mount Suribachi, a volcano on Iwo Jima, was captured by the Navy, six men raised the Flag of the United States. The Photo of this act became very popular and became the sample for the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
Mayon Volcano is found in the province of Albay. Its almost perfectly-shaped cone is considered by many people to be more beautiful than Mt. Fuji in Japan.
Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines, having erupted around 50 times for the past 400 years.
On March 29, 2007, the Shiveluch Volcano on the Russian Federation’s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory the volcano underwent an explosive eruption between 01:50 and 2:30 UTC, sending an ash cloud skyward roughly 9,750 meters (32,000 feet), based on visual estimates. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard NASA’s Aqua satell...
This image of Santorini Volcano in the Aegean Sea was taken by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), flying aboard NASA's Terra spacecraft. The image was taken on November 21, 2000, and covers an area of 18 by 18 km. The eruption of Santorini in 1650 B.C. was one of the largest in the last 10,000 years. About 30 cubic kilometers of magma was erupted, formin...
On October 22, 2005, the Sierra Negra Volcano on Isla Isabela in the Galapagos Islands began erupting, sending ash as high as 12,800 meters (42,000 feet), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This overlay image shows a strong plume of volcanic ash and steam flowing from the Sierra Negra Volcano on Isla Isabela and blowing to the southwest over the Pacific.
Smoke rising from Mount Suribachi as it is hit by aircraft bombs and ships' guns on 19 February 1945, probably just before U.S. Marines landed on Iwo Jima.
The rocks of Tobiishi Point, at Iwo Jima's southern end, are in the lower left.
Dukono Volcano on Halmahera, Indonesia, released a plume of ash and/or steam on December 5, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image the same day. In this image, Dukono’s ash plume peeks out from under fluffy white clouds clustered over the volcano’s summit.
DEVRIM prints can't be seen from the sky or via satellite image. The image here was done by an image processing tool - artificially - to show how these large letters appear to the naked eye. Original prints are vague and difficult to see. Image overlay in color. Ankara-Turkey. This overlay created to give an idea for people who wonder about these prints.

Aoba Volcano (Mt Manaro) is the dominant feature in this shaded-relief image of Ambae Island, part of the Vanuatu archipelago, which includes more than 80 islands in the South Pacific located about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to Australia. Last active in 1996, the 1,496-meter (4,908-foot), Hawaiian-style, basaltic shield volcano has lakes within its summit caldera, or crater. The Nove...
The eruption of Santa Maria volcano in 1902 was one of the largest eruptions of the 20th century, forming a large crater on the mountain’s southwest flank. Since 1922, a lava-dome complex, Santiaguito, has been forming in the 1902 crater. Growth of the dome has produced pyroclastic flows as recently as the 2001—they can be identified in this image. The city of Quezaltenango (approximately 90,00...
Alaska’s Augustine Volcano started 2006 with a bang, producing explosive eruptions in mid-January. The volcano had quieted by March 2006, although the Alaska Volcano Observatory warned that explosive eruptions could still occur at any time. The volcano continued a fairly similar behavior pattern in April.
The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) ...
