The mill was build in 1802 and was used until 1942. In the year 1945 the mill got badly damaged. Wings and roof were restored after the war, the bullet holes were bricked. Since 1954 the mill is in the possession of the city Krefeld. The grinding mill on the inside is still received.

Ibstone windmill, a smock mill, last worked during the First World War. However it gained a new lease of life in 1967 when it was fitted with mock sails and fantail in preparation for its appearance in the feature film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", as the workshop of the inventor, Caractacus Potts.
