Soby brown coal mine

Soby brown coal mine

This is the danish lignite or brown coal mine of Soby opened 1939 and lasted till 1970. The mine was 4000 acres big and over 2000 people worked here.

Today it's a museum with housings, a shop but also the equipment used to dig the coal.

The mine was also used as movie location for the danish Morten Korch movie "Vagabonderne paa Bakkegaarden" from 1958.

Otzenrath is a city soon to be gone because of the Ganzweiler II brown coal mine on the other side if the highway A44. It all began 1999 and latest 2007 all residents has to be moved to Neu-Otzenrath or any other place.
