Maleme airfield - the key to winning the battle for Crete. By the end of the first day Student had been receiving news of nothing but failure. Only at Maleme was there a glimmer of hope. The 3rd Parachute Regiment had secured neither Canea nor Galatas; the 2nd Parachute Regiment had captured a hill overlooking Retimo airfield, but had taken heavy casualties doing so; and the 1st Parachute Regim...
I created this file to preview scenarios in a WWII computer game that is historically based on the battles between Germany and the Allies in Greece, Crete and a hypothetical battle in Malta.
The file domnstrates one way that GE can be used with overlays, custom place markers, and narative to present the history of a certain event.
The two photos below are reconnaissance photos taken on the 26th May, they are from file AIR 40/1402 in the National Archives in Kew. There is another photo in the file from 23 May and a comparison shows the build up of aircraft on the ground at Maleme.
The second of the two photos is a blow up of the southern corner of the airfield. Some of them will be glidrs while others will be JU52...

Its surface is among the brightest in the solar system, a consequence of sunlight reflecting off a relatively young icy crust. Its face is also among the smoothest, lacking the heavily cratered appearance characteristic of Callisto and Ganymede. Lines and cracks wrap the exterior as if a child...

Dust blew off the African coast and over the Mediterranean Sea on June 9, 2007. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image the same day. In this image, the opaque tan dust plume billows off the coast, along the Libya-Egypt border, in a shape vaguely resembling a giant inverted teardrop.
This image of Santorini Volcano in the Aegean Sea was taken by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), flying aboard NASA's Terra spacecraft. The image was taken on November 21, 2000, and covers an area of 18 by 18 km. The eruption of Santorini in 1650 B.C. was one of the largest in the last 10,000 years. About 30 cubic kilometers of magma was erupted, formin...
The campaign in the Western Desert was fought between the Commonwealth forces (with, later, the addition of two brigades of Free French and one each of Polish and Greek troops) all based in Egypt, and the Axis forces (German and Italian) based in Libya. The battlefield, across which the fighting surged back and forth between 1940 and 1942, was the 1,000 kilometres of desert between Alexandria i...
