Now dwarfed by the modern buildings that surround it, the Old Windmill, built by convicts in 1828, never really worked as a windmill but was used as a treadmill to both grind corn and as punishment for the convicts.
Situated in the pretty village of Heckington is this unique eight-sailed working mill which produces stone ground flour by wind power. Orginally built in 1830 as a five-sailer, a violent thunderstorm blew off the cap and sails and it was repaired in 1892 with the cap and eight sails from a windmill in Boston, Lincolnshire. Ibstone windmill, a smock mill, last worked during the First World War. However it gained a new lease of life in 1967 when it was fitted with mock sails and fantail in preparation for its appearance in the feature film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", as the workshop of the inventor, Caractacus Potts. TV series "Good Night Mr. Tom" and "The Vicar of Dibley" were also filmed nearby.
