The observatory was build in two phases. The library was build in the late 1950th as a buildung of the 1st "Bundesgartenschau". In the middle of the 1970th the "Astronomische Verein Dortmund e.V." (founded 1913) has gone to this building.

On Easter Monday 2005 Dortmund Punk Thomas "Schmuddel" Schulz (32) was killed by a 17 year old Neonazi. These placemarks show the antifascistic demonstration which took place on the following Saturday (2 April 2005).
