Gripsholm Castle (Swedish: Gripsholms Slott) is a castle in Mariefred, Södermanland, in Sweden and is regarded as one of Sweden's finest historical monuments. It is located by lake Mälaren in south central Sweden, in the municipality of Strängnäs, about 60 km west of Stockholm.
Nationalmuseum is not only Sweden's largest art museum. In itself, the building is a striking feature of the Stockholm cityscape. Its architectural design, modelled on that of Florentine and Venetian Renaissance buildings, evokes Italy - the home of the fine arts.
Under the oddly-shaped roof of this popular museum building is the exhibition of Sweden´s naval pride "Wasa", which sunk on her maiden voyage in 1628. It was raised from the bottom of Stockholms harbour in 1961.

Work on breaking up the wreck began under the supervision of the British authorities. All valuable metals and the gunhouses and turrets were removed before the bare torso of the ship was abandoned where she lay.
