Dual Plume from Klyuchevskaya Volcano, 1 July 2007

Klyuchevskaya Volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula released a plume on July 1, 2007. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying on NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. Although opaque white clouds float overhead in this image, skies are clear enough to allow an easy view of the volcanic plume. This westward-blowing plume appears to have a dual nature. T...

Shiveluch and Klyuchevskaya Volcanoes

A distance of about 80 kilometers (50 miles) separates Shiveluch and Klyuchevskaya Volcanoes on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. ASTER “sees” a slightly different...

Ksudach Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia (overlay)

Some of the world’s most active volcanoes make up the spine of the Kamchatka Peninsula in far east Russia. Kamchatka is the northwestern edge of the Pacific “ring of fire,” where earthquakes and volcanism are caused by ongoing subduction of the Pacific oceanic plate beneath the Eurasian plate.

Landslide Buries Valley of the Geysers, 11 June 2007

Geysers are a rare natural phenomena found only in a few places, such as New Zealand, Iceland, the United States (Yellowstone National Park), and on Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. On June 3, 2007, one of these rare geyser fields was severely damaged when a landslide rolled through Russia’s Valley of the Geysers.
