"Seventeen years ago, astronomers spotted the brightest stellar explosion ever seen since the one observed by Johannes Kepler 400 years ago. Called SN 1987A, the titanic supernova explosion blazed with the power of 100,000,000 suns for several months following its discovery on Feb. 23, 1987. Although the supernova itself is a million times fainter than 17 years ago, a new light show in the...
NGC 2736 is called The Pencil Nebula. It is part of the Vela Supernova Remnant, located near the Vela Pulsar in the constellation Vela. The nebula's linear appearance triggered its popular name. It resides about 815 light-years (250 parsecs) away from our solar system. It is thought to formed from part of the shock wave of the larger Vela Supernova Remnant. The Pencil Nebula is moving at roughl...

"Glowing gaseous streamers of red, white, and blue — as well as green and pink — illuminate the heavens like Fourth of July fireworks. The colorful streamers that float across the sky in this photo taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope were created by the universe's biggest firecracker, the titanic supernova explosion of a massive star. The light from the exploding star reached Earth 320 ...
From these pits, the atomic bombs "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" were loaded into the B-29'ers "Enola Gay" and "Bockscar" on Augst 6 and 9, 1945 and eventually dropped above Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "Little Boy" caused the death of approxiametly 200.000 people by 1950, of whom 70.000 were killed instantly by the blast.

At 08:15, the Enola Gay dropped the nuclear bomb called "Little Boy" over the center of Hiroshima. It exploded about 2,000 feet above the city with a blast equivalent to 13 kilotons of TNT, killing an estimated 80,000 civilians.
Mount Meru is an active volcano located just 70 kilometers (44 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. It reaches 4,566 meters (14,978 feet) in height but has lost much of its bulk due to an eastward volcanic blast sometime in its distant past, perhaps similar to the eruption of Mount Saint Helens in Washington State in 1980.
