During the second world war there was a barrage balloon testing station here and this large shed was used to store the balloon. A large number of different trials and experiments took place here and nearby.

These buildings off Station Road are the remains of Site 7 of "F" Flight (based at East Halton) of the Humber Estuary Balloon Barrage. The balloons defended the nearby Admiralty oil storage depot.

RAF Fairlop was first used during the First World War as a Royal Naval Air Station Training School.
A small flying club used the site between the wars and there were plans to build a commercial airport, but these were later abandoned.
With WW2 a year old, construction of the concrete runways in the familiar "A" pattern started in September 1940 and were completed August 1941.

D-Day Embarkation Point at Barn Pool, Mount Edgcumbe

The embarkation point towards the top of the photo was designed for the embarkation of landing ships and tanks, that towards the bottom was for the embarkation of landing craft and troops. The circular structures towards the bottom left are fuel storage tanks. Many landing craft operated a shuttle service between England and Normandy taking on diesel from fuelling facilities at the hards.
