The basilica was probably founded by Pope St Marcus (Mark) in 336, and is one of Rome's oldest churches. It stand on the site where St Marcus is said to have lived, and was known as the Titulus Pallacinae.

The Papal Cross is a large white cross situated in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, Ireland. The Cross was erected for the visit of Pope John Paul II in September 1979. At the Cross, the Pope held Mass for over a million people. Following his death on April 2, 2005, people gathered in tribute to Pope John Paul at the Cross, leaving flowers and tokens of remembrance for him.
