The basilica was probably founded by Pope St Marcus (Mark) in 336, and is one of Rome's oldest churches. It stand on the site where St Marcus is said to have lived, and was known as the Titulus Pallacinae.

The Papal Cross is a large white cross situated in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, Ireland. The Cross was erected for the visit of Pope John Paul II in September 1979. This fortress has been strongly wanted by Pope Giulo II at the beginning of the XVI century, to improve the defense of the town from the pirates that were coming through the sea. The architect was Bramante, but he died in 1514 before the entire fortress was finished (1535) when the pope was Paolo III. The top part of the "Maschio" has been completed by Michelangelo.
