Construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1772, and the structure rises 144 meters in height above the cape.

The Cape May Canal was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the second world war as a protected route to avoid German submarines operating off Cape May Point and to become part of the Intracoastal Waterway System (ICW). Cape Isabel & Cape Inscription are two members of the Cape I class of Ro-Ro cargo ships in service with the Military Sealift Command as part of the Ready Reserve Force (RRF). Both ships were laid down at Bath Iron Works in the mid 1970's as commercial cargo ships and served in those trades until they were both sold to MARAD in the mid 1980's and converted for US Navy use.
