Open pit mining is an operation that starts with the cleaning of the surface and the careful withdrawal of the topsoil layer, which is stored for future rehabilitation of the involved lands.

 | This is the danish lignite or brown coal mine of Soby opened 1939 and lasted till 1970. The mine was 4000 acres big and over 2000 people worked here.
Today it's a museum with housings, a shop but also the equipment used to dig the coal.
