I've been lurking in here for a couple of days now, and I love this forum. I have a few problems, though. Are the Satellite images updated periodically? I have been backreading posts, and several don't have anything remotely like what they say they do...namely 2 jets over Italy (page 22, maybe 23), and Map of the US (page 25). I just upgraded my GoogleEarth to v.4.1.7087.5048 (beta).

Hi FOUNTG2
Welcome to GEH. We hope you'll have fun here. :yep:
The images are uploaded by Google from time to time when they recieve new images from various suppliers.
You see the companies below on the map: NASA, Navtec, Digital Globe etc.
We have members who message us in the forum when it has been updated.
You can also go to this blog where they tell the latest updates of images but also other great stuff you can use in GE.

So it has nothing to do with an update of Google Earth.
In our directories we have finds from our members but time after time images are renewed and what was there yesterday is away today. So if you find something in our data base and it's away we mods will move it in the category Outdated Items. :yep:
But there is a lot to find anyway. There is nothing uninteresting, what is interesting for you isn't interesting for others. That doesn't matter.
When you find something please seach our database if it isn't there allredy. Sad if a hard work with a file is made and we mods deny it because another member allready made it. But if a new image is there in GE, like a new maze, you are welcome to message us and we can renew the file. Then we'll credit the file with your find too.
And finally, if you have questions about you know but can't find you are welcome to ask. We are all here to help. :yep:

Open Google Earth , go to "layers", last item is "DigitalGlobe". Those are the updates of the pictures in GE. You need to "zoom" in on an area to see when they were taken.

Actually, those dates that pop up aren't actually the date the photo was taken. As far as i know, there isn't anyway of determining when a specific area was photographed. Unless you can see something in the actual photo itself that gives it away.

IF the image is from Digital Globe, the layers will generally show that tile as long as it's not too recent of a shot. Those dates are accurate and have greatly helped in identifying ships from various naval ships and the like. The difficulty comes, as I've mentioned before, when the images come from a source that is not Digital Globe. As sladys mentions, you can see who owns the copyrights of the images once you zoom in tightly on the spot you want to see.
However, some areas that are from Digital Globe are so patch-worked from various days that it becomes incredibly difficult to figure some of the smaller image sections. It can be very difficult to narrow down which tile is the correct one to get the date sometimes.
