Am I the only one who is missing a removing tool for anoying GEC-Files? What can I do to get rid of spam-files like "This is an aircraft bunker"?
Wasn't GEC supposed to provide information, don't they have admins who can delete files like these?

What do you mean by this statement.
If you don't like a file then simply don't look at it.
What is interesting for one member doesn't have to be interesting for another. If so we could deny thousands of files submitted and then it's totally censorship. And that is NOT the intention of GEH.
Finally. This is GEH, not GEC.

Although that file doesn't really interest me, I don't feel it's some kind of spam.
It's definitely a place of interest on our planet and it's connected to a dramatic historic event named gulf war which had influence on the whole world.
Sure, the autor could have offered more information in the file description but I think no one is bound to do that. In such a case people can use the rating system to show others what level of quality they can expect from this file.

@ photizo:
It's easy to remove the "spam-files" - in your layers palette (lower left corner of GEarth) open up the layer labeled "Gallery". Then, scroll down and find the layer named "Google Earth Community" and un-tick the checkmark.
GEC (Google Earth Community (http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php/Cat/0)) has been lambasted over the years for allowing so many placemarks (comments) to clutter up the GEC layer in GEarth. Here at GEH, the mods carefully check each submitted file and compare it to all the other placemarks available here at GEH.
@ everybody else:
I started to add my 2¢, asking Photizo why he/she didn't like this file, when I realized Photizo has many posts and has submitted a fair number of files to the GEH community. So he's probably not a rookie or unfamiliar with GEarth, so there had to be something more to his query.
So - re-read Photizo's post and his question makes perfect sense. He is asking why GEC has so many spam-like files.

OK now I don't know if this situation is more funny or embarrassing
Because when I checked the placemark and wondered about his criticism, the nearly 20 GEC marks annoyed me too. But I didn't connect them to his posting and thought he meant the linked file.

Like you Poomuckl, I just couldn't figure out why Photizo was upset with one particular GEH file. It took about 5 minutes before the little "Ah-Ha" light bulb went off above my head. So I restarted GEarth and turned on the GEC layer and I'm 99% certain I've decoded Photizo's comment correctly.

I know the admins at GEC work very hard to keep up on this issue. But it's an impossible task with 100's of new posts every day.
I leave GEC turned off and only turn it on when I'm trying to identify a specific object. That's really all it's good for anyway, so no reason to leave it on all the time.
I wish the admins over there would focus on cleaning up some of the duplicates. Try looking at GEC layer at peak of Mt. Everest, or the WTC site in NYC. There are dozens of placemarks that say nothing but "WTC site".

AHA. Now I also got it what he meant.
Surely the easiest way to find something not present in our directory. But I think many of our members do it that way.
So do members of other GE related sites. I have seen files found by our members being adopted into their.
But I have allready denied many files comming from GEC (i) where the text says something but not that clear to see if it's correct in the image.

Rockmadman, all you did was submit the file that caused Photizo to start an interesting discussion. So - you get a little credit, but you did nothing wrong.

I've separated this discussion from the starting thread. I think it is more appropriate to continue this in an own thread than in rockmadmans posting thread.

I think it would be easy for them to clean their database and to reduce future placemark spam.
They just had to offer two different types of threads via option. One would be the same as it is now with visible mark in GE client. In case someone wants to mark the home of an actor, offer nice background information etc.
The other would be a copy of the GEH method. Just a thread that links to a place but no mark in the GE client. They could make millions of "a car" placemarks with that method and GE wouldn't get polluted with that stuff.
That should considerably lower future spam.
And to reduce existing placemarks they could offer a voting system. At a certain number of negative votes the placemark is either moved into a spam folder that you can hide separately or the thread gets automatically switched to a GEH style placemark.
Wouldn't lead to extra work for them because the community would care about everything.

The dross which coats the GEC forums will never get any better. They technically have their 'moderated' forums now, but even so a lot of pathetic nonsense is through them. Shock of shocks, they did finally delete the bogus "U2 Taking Off" by the guy who refused to believe it was just the landing lights for the runway.
The head 'moderators' like the idea that anyone can post anything at any time, no matter how many times previously it was posted. Back when I gave up, they'd issued a rule to the other people that they couldn't remove the placemarks for this sort of thing anymore. I have no real idea how things are there these days, other than that when I wander by it all still looks rather chaotic. To them, it's not a mess .. it's freedom apparently.
How bad were things before they changed how placemarks are displayed? Here's a shot I took of London which was going to be a part of my 'guess which city this is' game.

I think I had to many christmas punch when I posted the threat directly related to one file :slant:
Sorry for that and thx to the people who understood my intention.
Thx to admins of GEH - you do an amazing job!
btw: I totally agree with poomuckl (nice name anyway)
