It was an extensive system of fortifications that ran the entire 1381 km (858 miles) length of the border between East Germany (the German Democratic Republic, GDR) and West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany, FRG). During the Cold War (1952-1990) the border system was used by the East German government to prevent its citizens from defecting to the West.<br /><br /><img src=http://www.gearthhacks.com/showimage.php?image=112807/861314zg.jpg>

...sorry to have to correct your dates: the wall only existed between 1961 and 1989. Having done your history you would also have told us that the wall was OFFICIALLY (!!!!) put in place as an 'anti-fascist-protection'. Another important fact is that an official 872 people died on the wall. If you have to write about recent history, please remember to mention the important facts.
Someone who was on the Wall on Nov. 9, 1989...
