google kml fetch of networklink failed ... ftp ... unsupported protocol

Hi all, I'm trying to load this KML:
ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/ionosonde/documentation/ionosonde.kml

Which fetches this KML via a NetworkLink:
ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/ionosonde/documentation/ionosonde_content.kml

I thought ftp:// was a valid href, I guess not.

Any suggestions?

I've heard this brought up before. I'm pretty sure it's a known limitation. Not sure if it's a bug or if Google planned it that way.
