View Full Version : StreetView Cities

We've just added a link to each file's page to show what city it is from (http://www.gearthhacks.com/streetview/cities.php). However, our method for determining the host city is a bit unorthodox.

We initially were going to just list the "official" city for that batch of StreetView imagery. However, some StreetView cities are lumped close together (with overlapping data) and it's hard to determine how to categorize the "in-between" locations (Chicago is a good example (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.544987,-88.577271&spn=1.906094,3.735352&z=8&layer=c)). This will continue to get worse as more and more cities are added by Google.

Instead, we've loaded our database with a list of every city in the US that has more than 1,000 residents -- around 15,000 cities in all. When a new item is added our StreetView database (http://www.gearthhacks.com/streetview/), we find the nearest city and put it in that group.

It's not perfect, but it should do a pretty good job for us. Please reply to this post if you have any questions or suggestions. Thanks!

Nice work.

How about adding City name to the overview page so we don't have to drill down to the detail page to see it?

Good call. I've just added almost all of the meta information (date, submitter, comments, location, category) to each overview page (city, category, newest, popular).

Thanks for the suggestion!

While you're at it, can you make the comments section clickable, and/or add a "Add Comment" spot under "Comments" on the overview page?

Sure. It'd be essentially the same as the title link AND as the "view full size" link, but I guess I could put in an anchor so if you clicked it, then it would pull up the detail page and scroll down to the comment section.

Is that what you mean?
