I'm incredibly annoyed right now. I'm getting a little fed up with Google's oh-so-helpful updater software that is just getting in the way more and more as time goes.
Before I go into MY problems, here is the DIRECT link to the Windows updater file, if you too are having problems doing the 'automatic' update:
EDIT: This might be only for the previous version of GE, not sure.
http://dl.google.com/earth/client/GE4/release_4_2/GoogleEarthWin.exe
It never really properly says why the installation fails, but keeps directing me to use the installation wizard, which also never completes. I just kept playing tag-team failures. After downloading that file I finally got the message that 'googleearth.exe' was not tagged for updating.
. . . . .
Things seem to uninstall and reinstall, but when it's done with that I still have the same old version as before. Rah.
The other kicker for me is that I had to pry that link I provided out of the website with a crowbar. The update page flips past the one with all of the REAL information to (again, oh-so-helpfully) put me on the automatic update page that is broken for me. I had to actually use a text-based browser (lynx) to be able to see that first page and then get the actual URL link to the file.
I've no idea what to do right now in order to get back up to the most current release.
