I'm incredibly annoyed right now. I'm getting a little fed up with Google's oh-so-helpful updater software that is just getting in the way more and more as time goes.

Before I go into MY problems, here is the DIRECT link to the Windows updater file, if you too are having problems doing the 'automatic' update:

EDIT: This might be only for the previous version of GE, not sure.
http://dl.google.com/earth/client/GE4/release_4_2/GoogleEarthWin.exe

It never really properly says why the installation fails, but keeps directing me to use the installation wizard, which also never completes. I just kept playing tag-team failures. After downloading that file I finally got the message that 'googleearth.exe' was not tagged for updating.

. . . . .

Things seem to uninstall and reinstall, but when it's done with that I still have the same old version as before. Rah.

The other kicker for me is that I had to pry that link I provided out of the website with a crowbar. The update page flips past the one with all of the REAL information to (again, oh-so-helpfully) put me on the automatic update page that is broken for me. I had to actually use a text-based browser (lynx) to be able to see that first page and then get the actual URL link to the file.

I've no idea what to do right now in order to get back up to the most current release.

Hi Munden.

I downloaded it directly from here and had no problems.

The installer has utterly mangled my installation now. I can't uninstall, reinstall, or in fact run the program at all anymore.

Before it actually TRIED to reinstall it, but now it doesn't even think I have GE installed. However, it doesn't seem to REALLY run the installer. It claims to start it and then poof, it says everything's installed and run the program.

That's a joke, of course, because nothing new is installed. I've posted on their support forums, but I expect no real help there at all.

I did locate their direct link to the most current EXE (the other one was to 4.2, which was till handy as it installed correctly at least)

I finally got it to tell me what's going wrong. It claims my MSI can't register some Flash object it wants to install. Sigh.

I managed to search for that error code and, gasp, found help that actually DID help!

I'll show the help item, because not only did it fix my GE install problem, but it also fixed a long-term QuickTime installation problem for me.
http://groups.google.com/group/earth-plus/browse_thread/thread/e51bf5b3773ec6ab

I downloaded their registry fixer tool and installed it. Running it gives a list of programs. I picked Google Earth. (and also, QuickTime as an after thought) I then selected "Remove" as it was the only thing that seemed to make sense.

Going back to the MOST CURRENT EXE file I downloaded, GE installed just fine. Of course now I have to go back and re-register the Plus version somehow. I also ran the QuickTime installer and it went by without a hitch and now the few .MOV files I couldn't play before are now playing fine.

I guess there really is no GAIN without PAIN.
