I think I cheated..I went to google and typed in "halfway between la and chicago" and got the answer:

MidPoint Cafe in Adrian, Texas, located on Route 66, 1139 miles from Los Angeles and 1139 miles from Chicago. (Although GE shows it as route 40)..

Well Done - The sign is across the road from the midpoint cafe

(Route 66 officially does not exist anymore but Interstate 40 now run along the same line....
