image overlay

im not sure if image overlay is even the correct term.
i want to take a google earth image and place it on a dome, thereby presenting a large top image and moving away into the distance the images on the peripherals and maybe keep gridlines.
much like taking a pic and placing on a ball.
can it be done?

I'm sure it is, because I remember someone making a 3d model of a spherical object and imbedding a picture on it's side. I just can't remember who, and I don't know how it's done. But it IS possible. *waits for someone with knowledge*

not really mine is just a graphics adaption.
