This is a discussion thread for the following file:

Famous Strange Statues and Fountains

There are quite a few blogs out there with lists of statues that seem strange to the authors of those blogs. I began a project to locate as many of them as I can. Thus far I've found quite a few. Most are visible, though some are in shadows or under trees or the image is too old. Also note that three or so of the statues are in other places in their own posts, but I wanted a proper complete list of statues I'd found in these blog posts.

Some statues include:

Europe:
Kafka monument, Prague
Tower Babies, Prague
Urinating Statues, Prague,
Policeman Being Tripped, Brussels
Faceless Seawall Babies, Belgium
Big Thumb, Paris
Tugendbrunnen, Nuremberg
Houseball, Berlin (it reminds people of Katamari Damacy)
Parking on a Building Side, Netherlands
'Iron Lady', Netherlands
Faucet, Netherlands
Gold Ladies, Netherlands
Cube Head, Spain (I know it has a name, but I can't find it)
Magic Faucet, Aqualand
River Statue, Cordova
Hands, Como Italy
Melting Cow, Hungary
Headington Shark
Minotaur and Hare, Cheltenham
Twisted Revolver, Malmo - Sweden

Americas:
Walking to the Sky, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Cloud Gate (aka The Bean), Chicago Illinois
Massive Fork, Springfield Missouri
Massive Chair, Los Angeles, California
Since I uploaded the file I've edited several of the placemarks to properly reflect the name of the statue and artist as soon as I figured it out. Some of the works get a bit more information, if it's interesting.

I've also added several statues since the file first went live. There's still more out there, but they'll come in time. I try to keep the main page udated with most of the statues that are placemarked.

Here's one you can add.
It's in Liverpool and has it's own website.
It's position is 53Deg 24' 39.38''N 2deg 59'17.16W
It' worth a look although there's not much to see on Google earth, there are Panoramio photo's loaded on there.

Yep, you got a 5 from me too. Spectacular file!

Plus, as a bonus...a lot of the American ones are on StreetView.

WOAH: I didn't read properly...you ALREADY have them on StreetView. Dayum!!

Eeeks..the Peeing Statues in Czech Republic are sooo disturbing...especially that video..

06-19-2008, 12:53 AM
wow, thanks folks!

I've updated the file to include the Super Lamb Banana. My focus is more on ones people have in the blogs, but maybe the blogs just haven't branched out enough. :)

heh, Spider. Those statues in Prague are a bit odd. I went looking for video because it seemed like something people would make up just for a laugh. There are quite a few videos of them, though, yeah. :) I've looked for a video of the artists's sculpture in North Carolina, but haven't found one yet. I suspect I'll have to look up strange terms like 'silver head fountain' or something along those lines. I doubt most folks know the proper name.

I think I've made some minor updates in the meantime, but primarily I was able to track down the bathing woman in Santa Fe to the Hahn Ross Gallery thanks to Roxanne Swentzell, another artist in the area. In fact you CAN just see her head or feet in Street View, depending on the angle you choose. I set the one in the placemark to show her head.

I have added yet more statues to the list:

Gud Fader, Stockholm (water arch)
"Tree Rock", Ponta Grossa, Brazil (the title is one I made up)
Fluegelauto (Winged Car), Cologne, Germany
"Ear Statue", Cologne, Germany
Paparazzi Statue, Bratislava
The Man Who Measures the Clouds, including FOUR installations of this around the world.

I updated a few entries with proper titles and artists such as 'La Mano' in Uruguay.

About the twisted revolver. You have found 2 so far but there are around 20 around the world.

I found the one in Berlin

Here is a site about the twisted revolver:

Thanks for pointing out that page and the one in Berlin. :) I actually only have one of the "Non-Violence" statues marked, the one in Malmo. Having done "The Man Who Measures the Clouds" I was thinking about finding the other revolvers too, so that page will definitely big a big help. :)

Here is even more for you.

Site with odd sculptures, I don't know if you have that:

Here is one of mine you may use too:

Finally the hand and face in Stockholm canal.

06-27-2008, 02:56 PM
I do have the 'haha' site marked already, but thanks.

Also, thanks for the finger/face sculpture in Sweden. I was looking in that area between the bridges, but thought those two bits of white were rowboats or something else.

I don't know if they're still there or not. I've found pictures of the face part in Paris, so that I know the title and artist. Now I have another place to put them. :)

06-27-2008, 03:03 PM
Actually, as I look at the shot for Mobile Water Venus (the face in the water) I can't match that location up with the buildings in the image. I'll have to look into it more to be sure that's the spot.

EDIT: actually, nevermind. After some more rotating and searching I think I see where the photograph was taken. :)

I just found out it is on tour. Two years ago it was there in Stockholm. Now it's in the Médicis fountain in Jardin du Luxemburg in Paris from May 20 - September 24. Face only.

Video on YouTube:

ah! The pool looked very small to have the finger too. That makes sense. The tours are neat to give other people a chance to see things, but it makes it hard to put in placemarks! ;) That 'Man Hanging Out' is also touring around to a lot of places, making it impossible to know where I should put a placemark.

Thanks for the links. :)

I've uploaded the additions I have so far. Eight copies of "Non-Violence", Water Mobile Venus (2), and the Merman and His Seven Sons.

heh, I was thrown briefly when looking up information about the merman statue because there's also a very different statue of the subject in Århus. :) Thanks again for pointing that one out. I've not seen it on any blog, but it's a really interesting piece and I think people should know about it. :)

06-27-2008, 08:08 PM
You are welcome. :)

By the way, you have written wrong in the Merman spot. You write Agnete is not present, but she is. She is holding her hands to her face crying. :yep:

So you see the Merman, Agnete and the 7 sons. :)

I added the one from Aarhus standing next to the town hall. But in that you only see the Merman and Agnete.

06-27-2008, 09:26 PM
Yeah, I'd found the other one, but just didn't put it into the list. :)

About the underwater statues, though, if the mer-person you mentioned was her there would only be six sons. The texts I've read are that it's the Merman and seven sons as they wait for Agnete to return. (implying she's not there)

06-27-2008, 11:58 PM
I've added a couple more statues I thought I'd mention. both in Germany.

One is in Fulda and is titled "Papiermännchen".

The other is a set of laughing statues known as "Das Wahlversprechen" in Harrislee. After finding the translation for the title as being "Election Promises" I can really relate to the humor! ;)

06-28-2008, 05:35 PM
Fixed the location of "Hashire!" aka "Knotted Legs" in Kanazawa, Japan
Fixed the location of the Paparazzi statue.
Added the Russian zodiac statue park
Added "Man at Work" in Bratislava
Added the Charles La Trobe statue in Melbourne

06-28-2008, 11:48 PM
I need to note the updates before I forget all of them:

Added "Bird" by Botero and fixed its position along with that of the Swimming Boys in Singapore.
Added "Purse" in Melbourne
Added "Windy Day" in Salt Lake City
Added "Shaking Man" in San Francisco
Added "The Illuminated Crowd" in Montreal
Added "The Kiss" in Kharkov
Added the anatomical sculpture at the University of Tübingen
Added Optimistorkestern in Stockholm (steel marching band)
Added Millesgården near Stockholm
Added Cosmonaut Cow, Stockholm
Added Heads and Hands, Turin Italy
Added the Russian zodiac statue park

Added several Armenian statues:
Bear, Bull and Horse statues, Yerevan
Piano Player, Yerevan
Cat, Yerevan
Two Figures, Yerevan (on the Cascades)
Roman Soldier, Yerevan
'Figure', Yerevan (by Ervand Kochar)

whew, it was a long day! :)

I have updated some of the placemarks in Prague for the new imagery. I didn't quite have the "Parable with Skull" and peeing statues in front of the Kafka Museum positioned quite correctly.

10-15-2008, 04:04 AM
I didn't note it at the time, but I updated the positions of the statues in Prague when they put in the excellent imagery there a while back.

This time around, the update is smaller as I've included a Street View link for the Paris statue "Walker Through Walls"

10-15-2008, 08:29 PM
I remembered today that there was also a statue in Nice which also got a Street View update. As a result, Tête au carré has a Street View link now. That's the massive bust statue with a block for a head.

01-17-2009, 09:32 PM
I noticed many of the images in the placemarks had become broken links and fixed them, while also increasing the size within the placemark window. Most folks run at higher resolutions these days, and I think I was overly cautious before.

08-30-2009, 03:07 AM
I've made updates over time, but I can't remember them all. One of the most recent, at least, is that I found the location of one the more difficult ones that had been rumored to be in Prague. The sculpture is called "The Bench of Vices".

08-31-2009, 12:25 PM
Here are 3 more from my town.

08-31-2009, 08:04 PM
Those are neat, Sladys. :) Did you want me to add them? Most of the sculptures are from the blog lists, but those are easily neat enough to qualify!

08-31-2009, 08:55 PM
yes you can add them

10-12-2009, 10:33 PM
I've updated these placemarks to include the new StreetView images where it was applicable, such as Canadian and Czech locations.
