Can someone give a quick idea of how to format a default template? I've pulled the code out of other placemarks, but copying it back into the description field strips out the formatting underneath. HEEEEELP! please

If you paste anything into the description field in Google Earth it will strip out the formatting. You'll need to save the file to your PC, edit it (notepad, probably) and insert the code directly into the KML.
If there's an easier way to do it (which is very possible), I'd love to hear it.

Awesome, good to know. Can I then apply the code as a template to newly created placemarks? I'm working on a project where I will have placemarks throughout the country, and I want them all to have the same feel/format, with different balloon contents (i.e. pics, text, video). I have the kml pretty much the way I want it, but I can't figure out how to duplicate my sample place mark with the same <bgColor> etc. in different places.
If there's a way to do this, I would really appreciate any help you have time to offer.

Of course sadly right now they don't have proper 'templates' for making new placemarks.
Yes, if you copy and paste that 'template' placemark ALL of the KML code goes with it. You can then feel free to update the description for the main body of text as per usual within Google Earth. Just 'copy' the placemark and then 'paste' it into your new directory. Edit it however you prefer to move it and then update the description text with what you want. That's how I tend to do all of my own placemarks.
