Hi, the other day I had to do some polygons over GE from Excel data and found some bad solutions out there on how to do this. They all require macro editing and finding out the coordinates of the polygons.

I decided to try and make my own Excel AddIn to easily chart data over GE with polygons. I think is as easy as it can get but Im open for improvements!

Please try it at http://www.cctindustrial.com/kmlxl

Be sure to read the tutorial so you know what to do. Once you do it for the first time you will do the next one in a minute or two...

Let me know what you think and Im sorry for errors, is the first release...

Hi,

I started to receive some feedback and I´m glad so many people is trying the app. Just a couple of Q&A I got.

Q: The polygons dont rise from the ground
The value field you enter on Excel is pasted to Google Earth as the height of the polygons you draw. Since the height is in meters or somethings, if you enter a value too small, the polygons will not seem to raise from ground. Try multiplying them by a large number, like 100 or 1000.

Q: I dont see the polygons after export
You have to turn the TERRAIN layer off in the lower left box. If this layer is on, the terrain in some places could raise above the polygons covering them and making the invisible.

Thank you again for your feed back.

I just downloaded your file and the pdf instructions. I haven't had a chance to check them out yet, but I plan to in the next few days. I'll get back to you with any questions and/or comments.

Thanks.

Gave it a test-drive, and I'm pleased to report good results. I had some trouble getting it to work in Office 2007. I don't know if it was the software or me , though. I eventually got things up and running in Office 2003. Turned out, though, that I had misspelled one of the placemarks, so the plugin and I had a disagreement about the number of polygons involved. Once I fixed my spelling, however, all went well. I am especially impressed with the ease with which I could alter data and update the kml accordingly. A pleasant change from slogging through a kml file in a text editor.

I had one odd issue, though. The file I experimented with contained 29 polygons. They were three different colors, and three different heights (based on the same criteria). The colors I used were red, blue, and yellow. Their corresponding heights were 60, 80 and 100, respectively. When I exported to kml, each one of these groups (red, blue, yellow) contained exactly one polygon that appeared to be a different color than the others. I say 'appeared' because, according to all the settings, they were the same colors as the rest of the polygons. On the screen, however, they were clearly a different color. It turned out to be only a minor annoyance, though. I ended up fixing it by the simple expedient of adding '1' to the heights of all the polygons (done within Google Earth).

Aside from that minor gripe, however, I have to say your add-in works like a charm. Thanks.

I'll also try it later, but I'm still on vacation and don't have a compute with GE. I'll be home in 2 days or so..
