Greetings from noob.

Been using GE for a while now, have made a few placemarks too.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the directory tree for Layers is constantly changing. This drives me nuts. I can never find particular categories again.

Where has "military" gone? Where has "history" gone?

It sounds like you are talking about the Google Earth Community layers. The individual forums were combined. The only way to view them is to turn on all of them at once. You the GEC layer here:
