Elevation charts for paths

Is there a way to create an elevation chart from a path? They are common in many marathon courses maps I've found on the Web, but I'd like to know if there is a way to do so in GE, or maybe a program that gives us the information in text and then we use MS Excel to make the graphic (or something like this).

I don't know of a way to do this GE, but here's (http://freegeographytools.com/2007/elevation-profile-in-google-maps) a way to do it on Google Maps.
