Each of its octagonal faces is nearly double the size of the more famous Big Ben in London. Each of the hour hands is 4.8 meters (15'-9") long and weighs 229 kg (490 lbs). The minute hands are 6.1 meters (20'-0") long and weigh 240 kilograms (530 lbs). Hour markings on each face are 1.2 meters (4'-0") high. Ships plying Lake Michigan often rely upon this lighted clock for navigation.
