hello. i've posted this on google earth community but still no reply...hope you can give me some help. Please consider it always refers to the GE forum and not this forum...

//////////////////////////////////////////

Hello. I'm posting this again as first i tought it was just me being confused but now i am even more confused.

I posted these 2 images like one week ago in regards of antarctica shoots taken from google maps.

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/1061/googlemapsp.th.jpg (http://img516.imageshack.us/my.php?image=googlemapsp.jpg)

This region refers to the relative google earth map you can see below:

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/685/googleearth.th.jpg (http://img524.imageshack.us/my.php?image=googleearth.jpg)

I was simply asking why that region was not the same both on google earth and google maps. Getting no reply i posted again in another section and the day after i've seen my post deleted...and i tought ok..it was my first post..so maybe i did something wrong.

Fact is the the day after i checked back that region and what i found is that the region satelite image was not the same anymore. More exactly it was replaced with this picture. (which looks more or less like the one on google earth)

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/3262/googlemapsnow.th.jpg (http://img260.imageshack.us/my.php?image=googlemapsnow.jpg)

So in a first place i thought it was an error that has then corrected. But actually this is not exactly correct. Infact i was just checking the new service of erdas satellite browsing now and i found the region is indeed the same that showed before on google maps. (you can check yourself on erdas site)

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/8356/erdas.th.jpg (http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=erdas.jpg)

So now my question is. what is the correct image and also what are these things that looks more dark than the rest of the ice/snow? Has it to do with some enviromental changes?

I would appreciate a reply. Hope this is the correct section.

Thanks

Welcome to GEH antarcticaboy.

hello. i've posted this on google earth community but still no replyAh - GEC, the forum where ignoring newbies is an art form :D

I was simply asking why that region was not the same both on google earth and google maps.Google Earth and Google Maps sometimes use different base imagery for their services. In some areas, Maps' imagery is newer than Earth's. In other places, Earth's imagery is newer. To make it more confusing; in most locations the imagery is the same.

There's no rhyme or reason to who has newer images, Google is funny that way.

Getting no reply i posted again in another section and the day after i've seen my post deleted...and i tought ok..it was my first post..so maybe i did something wrong. We delete duplicate posts here too, but we will leave a little note telling you why. You can rarely go wrong here at GEH.

So now my question is. what is the correct image I can't see your last image (erdas.jpg), but the answer is each image was correct on the day it was taken.

Which image is newest? I would guess Erdas is older than Google. But I'm making that assumption based on some guesses made as I follow your description of the timeline.

also what are these things that looks more dark than the rest of the ice/snow?Not sure what you are referring to. Is there any chance you could post a link to the Google Maps location and a kmz for the Google Earth location?

I would appreciate a reply. Our pleasure.

Hope this is the correct section. You chose well.

i basically refer to that darker part of ice that looks like ice melting or something. It is essentialy formed by 2 sort of darker blue lake shaped things. I also read about something related to this in Ross sea around the net.

Also the the point is not what is the earlier image because the one on google earth looks to me older than and also fake compared to the one shown on google maps before and also on erdas satellite.

that's the reply i got anyway.

While GE and GMaps use essentially the same imagery, GMaps is used by most who use it for practical information near home or when planning a trip. GE is for that but also for exploring the globe and is more detailed in some areas than Gmaps at times. Eventually the imagery gets in synch.

There are several problems near the poles. First GMaps is like a Mercator projection where Greenland ends up looking as big as South America. GE places it's imagery on what is essentially a globe. But here there is another problem near the poles. The imagery gets distorted by the old flattening-the-orange-skin problem.

actually i can't say it is a clear reply anyway...

I'll be more than happy to take a closer look if you want to post a placemark for the Earth image and a link for the Maps image.

It also makes sense that Google will pay less attention to the Maps imagery in places where there are no roads.
