This is a discussion thread for the following file:

Jonestown, Guyana

The place where Jim Jones, would-be messiah, convinced and helped those who weren't convinced to commit suicide in 1978. Over 900 people, including more than 270 children, drank cyanide-poisoned punch, and those who refused were shot. Purportedly, Jim thought he was just helping them to get to heaven.

This tag is innacurate in both location and description.

Jim Jones was not a Christian, and did not believe in heaven. Jonestown was a socialist/communist agricultural commue founded by Jim Jones organization 'The Peoples Temple'. The commune essentially turned into a prison camp under the tyranical rule of Jones, who by the time he joined his commune in Guyana was a paranoid drug addict. The followers "killed themselves" as a statement to the world after some relatives sent a delegation down to Guyana to inquire about the well-being of their relatives at Jonestown, and congressman Leo Ryan and four others were gunned down per Jones orders at the airstrip in Port Kaituma as they were attempting to leave. The murders/suicides took place back at the compound, after this shooting at the airstrip. There was never talk of heaven. It was all paranoia (i.e. "they are coming to torture our babies!!"... etc.).

Also the location is wrong. You have marked the town of Port Kaituma. While close, this is not the location of the Jonestown compound. The actual coordiantes of the compound is: 7 41 17N ; 59 56 59W.
