View Full Version : Challenge - The Big Dipper

08-22-2005, 06:28 PM
An unusual challenge:

I learned that the stars around Google Earth are actually placed in their right position, but I couldn't find any known star constellation. So my challenge is to find a constellation like the Big Dipper (Big Bear, Grosser Bär, Grote Beer), or even better, my favorite, Orion.

Easy to say :-) can you share them also?

Move far out as you can at: 14d 18' 25.12'' N , 91d 17' 36.10'' E

I can now see ORION on top of the earth.

At: 44d 54' 22.02'' S, 165d 41' 19.82'' W

You can now see URSUS MAJOR.

Thanks McMaster, but with all my best intentions I can't make out Ursus Major and only with mild conviction Orion; maybe that's also why I couldn't find it before ;-) - I guess I wasn't born to navigate on stars. I attached the placemarkers with zoomed out view, just to check correctness as your coordinates were not recognized by GE. I 'translated' them into, assuming the 'd' equals '°':
44°54'22.02"N, 165°41'19.82"E (Ursus Major) and
14°18'25.12"N, 91°17'36.10"E (Orion)

Great, even I see it now! Here are the placemarkers for them.

Taurus and the Pleiades

Tuarus is like a laying V and the Pleiades are above (these ~8 stars right edge)

When everyone will some more I find them :)

Lepus (Latin for Hare) is a constellation, lying just south of Orion, and possibly representing a hare being chased by him. Lepus was one of the Ptolemy's 48 constellations, and counts also among the 88 modern constellations.

sorry no good picture for that, you must use the link.

Great McMaster, but wouldn't it be possible to also provide placemarkers? This can be done fairly simple by creating an almost random placemarker, setting the view according to the constellation and then set a 'Snapshot View' for the placemarker (right-click the marker).

Ah ok, I will try this for the next ones if neccessary.

Many thx.
