You are looking at the small crater that Opportunity landed in. You can check out other images of the crater here (http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/panoramas/opportunity/2004.html) to get an idea of how small the things you are looking at are. They are most likely bits of the airbags or other detritus brought along by the rover when it landed. They are very close to the rover in the near foreground so they are very tiny. There are a couple of additional panoramas that show the items and their scale.

There are many photos that show stuff that came off of the rovers when they landed including the parachutes and the aeroshell.
