Coordinates:

37"47'46.94N by 116"45'55.00W @62 miles NNW of the Groom Lake facility.

This facility appears to be a government installation for a number of reasons:

1: Triple-thickness security perimeter surrounding inner areas of base with the inner two fences being separated by a 30-foot gap.

2: Obvious institutional construction.

3: Apparent munitions storage area to north of base.

4: Lack of nearby civilian population center. Tonopah, Nv. is @ 32 miles to the northwest.

5: Nearly all vehicles on premises are white. Odd for a civilian facility but in keeping with governmental theme.

What's strange is that aside from two passenger jets (727 or 737?) on the tarmac, there are no other aircraft visible on site. What is this place? I'd love to know. The USGS topography maps from 1983 list an airstrip being there, but don't show anything like what I'm seeing.

Any ideas?

Do you mean the Tonopah Test Range?

Yes, these are two old 737, because there engines shows that these are older.

What I find interesting is just about 6mi. north of this facility is what looks like a residential compound, complete with two baseball fields, a football field and track, and two tennis courts. Not to mention the security gate and parking lot.

Its a regular Club Med.

Why did terraserver have it removed from their mosaic like Groom lake?

The USGS topo maps have the general area listed as "tonopah test range", but it shows nothing this complex. And where is all the stuff? Aside from the passenger jets, there are no aircraft to be seen. Does it have an exact name? Like "Tonopah AFB" or something else?

Also, all the buildings seem to be of about the same style and vintage. Other airbases usually look like a mishmash of architectural styles because their buildings are constructed over time and by different contractors. These all look like they were built at about the same time. In fact, the whole base seems "clean". US airbases seem tidy, but this place is almost anally retentive.

This area is under control of the Department of Energy, not the USAF.

The planes (called Janet Planes) are shuttles between the whole Area 51 istallations and Nellis AFB.

Look at this site:

Looks like (according to "Jim Butler's Hotel" nearby) that it was a nuclear test facility - hence hte circle on the lake (Dry bomb run?)........

DOE also does that stuff.

I see two craters from underground blasts about 7 miles due north.......they look like mountains but turn the pic upside down and they are craters....

Cool stuff!

Those aren't craters.

The Nevada Test Site is to the south.
