This is a discussion thread for the following file:

Google Maps 45 Degree Imagery Locations

The outlines show the general area where you can find 45 degree imagery. It's simply far too time consuming to precisely follow every twist and turn in the actual line, but the outlines are along the edges. As time goes and Google adds more areas, I will continue to update this file. Please see my post in the forums about 45 degree imagery for a tutorial and a city list.
Added:
Las Vegas (northern section)
Boulder City, NV

Expanded:
Salt Lake City, UT (vastly larger now)
San Antonio, TX

I think I've finished all of the new places that had to be added. There are still some locations I need to make certain haven't been expanded yet though.

I fixed New Orleans, which had been expanded to the east.

They did an update, so I'm adding cities. There's still quite a few left to go, but here's the first update to my file.

Added:
Augusta, Georgia
Boise, Idaho
Boston, Massachusetts
Knoxville, Tennessee
Provo, Utah (it was added to the Salt Lake City imagery)
Reno, Nevada
Tallahassee, Florida
Witchita, Kansas

I think it's back up to date again.

Added:
Spain: Badajoz, Girona, and Merida
Switzerland: Lausanne
USA:
Little Rock, Arksansas
Montgomery, Alabama
Salem, Oregon
Spokane, Washington

(California)
Fairfield and Vacaville
Lodi
Modesto
Murietta Hot Springs (added to Los Angeles, also deleted the Hemet polygon since it was also added to Los Angeles)
Sebastapol
Vallejo (added to San Francisco, part of the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet is visible) this also joined Napa Valley to San Francisco, so I merged those polygons too.
Victorville
Yucaipa (added to Los Angeles)

Some of these had very odd shapes. The area added for Yucaipa in particular is very odd. It has tattered edges and a missing strip down the middle.

They expanded the coverage of Boise, ID and south of San Jose such as adding Gilroy. They also pushed the eastern edge of the Oakland area off into the mountains rather than cutting off some of the communities on the edge.

I'm continuing to look for more expansions like this and new cities.

I've added their expanded coverage to the west and some south of New Orleans.

I also outlined two newly added small towns in California: Davis and Dixon.

Munden

I made another minor update. I found that the California cities of Merced and Atwater were added at some point. I've included those in the file now.

Munden

They added some imagery that was missing near Los Angeles. There's still a very odd patch missing, but the port is now visible. Take a look at the two SeaLaunch platforms (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=33.745193,-118.224784&spn=0.00281,0.003482&t=h&z=19&vpsrc=6) for instance.

They added some more, probably just today:

Added:
Bakersfield, California
Kansas City, Missouri
Springfield, Missouri

Expanded:
St Louis, Missouri (on both the west and east sides)

Munden
10-14-2011, 03:16 AM
Added --
Colombia, South Carolina

sorry, I should've waited a little while longer before making the other post.

Munden

Added:

Lawrence, Kansas
Woodland, California

USA --
Canton, Ohio
Austria --
Graz
Switzerland --
Montreux (added to Lausanne)

Munden

Added Enumclaw in Washington.

Just as a note, the Google LatLon blog claimed that 3 other cities were added, but it's clear that this was a mistake.

The cities they incorrectly claimed have 45 degree imagery are:
Omaha, Nebraska
The Woodlands, Texas
Zurich, Switzerland

I've added more US cities. There are several foreign cities I need to work on too. This updated was delayed because of work, mostly. Then, when I was going to start it .. I took an arrow in the knee.

Added:
Boulder, Colorado
Tacoma, Washington

Expanded:
Little Rock, Arkansas now includes Benton
St Paul, Minnesota now includes Minneapolis (and I renamed that outline)
Healdsburg, California now includes Petaluma and Sonoma

Munden
12-19-2011, 12:56 AM
Added:
Birmingham, Alabama
Jackson, Mississippi
Charlotte, North Carolina
Raleigh, North Carolina
Memphis, Tennessee
Seattle, Washington (note, it's cut in two by a missing strip.)

Expanded:
Las Vegas

I still need to check on Tulsa to see if that expanded and also need to add several non-USA cities.

Ok, I decided to bite the bullet and finish this off.

As a note for Los Angeles, the blank area that once used to hover north of Compton is filled in with imagery now.

Added:
USA - Tulsa, Oklahoma
UK - Leeds
Brazil - Brasilia
Austria - Linz
Austria - Steyr
Spain - Cuenca
Spain - Manresa
Spain - Zamora

I think that's it for now. I might actually be caught up.

Fayetteville, Arkansas
Baton Rouge, Louisianna
Detroit, Michigan

The Boston coverage was expanded to the east to include the docks and other areas.

One item of interest was the Italian Navy ship L-9894 San Giusto is visible in several angles. (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=42.343205,-71.028655&spn=0.002484,0.002427&t=h&z=19&vpsrc=6) The ship is an amphibious transport for troops and vehicles. A Bob Hope class US vessel can be seen in the nearby dry dock in one angle.

Do you think they'll ever shift their 45 degree imagery to Google Earth, or keep it Google Maps only?

Munden
02-09-2012, 10:41 PM
It's possible, but it might be more difficult than other changes since they'd have to lock the camera yaw and pitch values. I suspect it to be possible since they change the UI around so dramatically for Street View in GE.

Personally, I do think they will get to it eventually because it's a nice tool. If they do plan on it, I would also imagine it's not a high priority since we can use Google Maps to view it. I just hope they leave the mouse wheel to do a proper zoom and not mess it up like they did with the Street View UI.

I'd probably keep doing this even after that, though. I don't think their interface will highlight where to find the imagery from a high altitude. I would imagine when it comes, there will be a new icon that becomes active if you're zoomed in and move over an area with 45 degree imagery.
