100 troop armies. 1 a minute for over an hour. With the odd gap to fix the script. Didn't make a dent though.

Dr. Livingstone found Stanley in Africa

5 years after his disappearance, a young journalist of The New York Herald was sent to find Dr. David Livingston. That young man then received a title of "Sir" and his name was also "Stanley"

Just a coincidence ey!!?... ;)

Good heavens, no. Don't destroy any of Stanley's troops. We will all need all we have for dealing with Nilla.

I just scouted Sao Paulo, and he had 100,004 troops in one army there.

LOL

That's just perverse!

His frontier guard at Barcelona had over 11K, and I'm not gonna waste that much of my own just to find out what kind of numbers are at city center. That's an expensive scout to send to his doom!

And forget Baghdad. He has 6 circles of Hell there.

Stanley

rasqual

I could give a bit more than that, but folks. we're not close. And after Sao Paulo, you KNOW his other holdings are ludicrous. I mean, where we can see him directly he flourishes 100K. Your 15 would just kill his scout-killer in Spain. Can you IMAGINE Baghdad?

It's perverse when a scout needs to exceed 11K.

rasqual

And here's the rub -- there's no time requirement for reinforcing troops. None. The conscripts don't even need to go through boot camp, and they're immediately as effective as the seasoned veterans in the armies. THAT's a problem. Mickey? Seriously. So Nilla can read this and, while chortling mightily, bump his numbers just as we get to the city, to mock us (on this reading, reserve geos are the REAL central defense of any occupation)

I say that armies should take time to raise. The money should be gone instantly (like a congressional allocation), but the armies should take time. That way an attack cannot be countered instantly with the merest bloomin' bank transaction of exchanging geos for troops.

Aside from the time issue, we need force differentiation not only to make the game interesting, but to make boots less capable as fighters.

rasqual
09-08-2005, 11:31 PM
Oh, and guys? Remember that Nilla comes away from the calculus on the flip side of this wisdom. We dare not attack, but he needn't show any restraint in requital of our caution. We live and move and have our being by his grace, at present.

I counsel us to repair to our chambers and pray to Mickey. ;-/

Hmmm yes, like in rankings. Now soldier vs soldier is 50/50. What about paying for training or just let time do the training. It could go up in ranking.

example: general vs soldier is 80/20

WE are getting into trying to mimic the real world, when in fact we are finding out the true limits of a game. Make the armies only come from bases; then we all see the movement and know the time of arrival, then the game becomes more regional, and only the big guys go beyond a range of 5-6 hours to new conquests. However, Micky we then need methods of raising funds in each geographic region .... Asia and Europe need resource options ... suggest Coal in Germany and Rice in China?
THe problem I see with Grunts to Generals would only come from time and experience and that would hamper any new entries into the game, unless the world gets bigger (more than triple the cities).

<. . . . . >I want to see a complete accounting posted, of any battle that exhausts 300,000 troops. ;-)

Mickey, I have a suggestion. Make each skirmish somewhat proportional to the number of troops involved. There's no sense running squad-sized battles when strengths way beyond regimental levels are engaged in mortal combat. ;-)

Mickey

Mickey, I have a suggestion. Make each skirmish somewhat proportional to the number of troops involved. There's no sense running squad-sized battles when strengths way beyond regimental levels are engaged in mortal combat.

Good idea. How best would I do that? Have it destroy from 1 - "10% of largest army" in each attack (instead of just 1-50), or something along those lines?

rasqual
09-11-2005, 04:36 AM
I'd say use some randomness so the conflict better reflects the surprising vagaries of war.

10% sounds good as an average number. Maybe something like this -- using the smaller army's number of troops (defender, attacker), determine the proportion of the attacker's troops that actually attack in one skirmish by something like

# of troops attacking = .03 + rand() * .2 * smallest(attacker, defender)

That would give you randomly between 4 and 34 skirmishes per battle. You could always:

# of troops attacking = .03 + rand()^2 * .2 * smallest(attacker, defender)

which would do the same, but would weight it toward more frequently seeing larger numbers of skirmishes (fewer troops per).

Something like that. Oh, yeah -- if the attacker prevailed, the calculus would be redone (always calculate on the smaller of the two engaged armies). But hey, make the battles play out over time -- not all at once!

Lukepuuk
09-11-2005, 01:37 PM
But hey, make the battles play out over time -- not all at once!

That makes sense. Maybe this way a defending army can also call backup from a nearby homebase or city. Or quickly buy some new troops.

It also adds to the excitement because you have to keep following the battle 'over time'.

rasqual
09-11-2005, 07:15 PM
Shouldn't be able to buy new troops quickly. Raising troop numbers from recruits is another thing that should take time.

Bringing an army from elsewhere to reinforce the occupation forces already takes time, so Mickey doesn't need to tweak that.

Roger Andrew
09-12-2005, 01:02 PM
I like the way this is going in terms of the randomness being applied to larger numbers, as this can make an unexpected outcome if "luck" runs aginst the larger foe.
