The characters mean "oil" - "you" in Mandarin, "yau" in Cantonese. They are the right way round. One has to assume it's petroleum-related, but the characters could refer to any kind of "oil", even soy sauce, which is "jiang you". However, that would be rather a lot of soy sauce. Ahem.
