View Full Version : Image Verification

I've made a number of changes to the image verification script tonight, and I'm considering a few more big moves.

First, the back-end of it has been rewritten a good bit, so it should (hopefully) work correctly 100% of the time. The images have also been enlarged quite a bit, the blue color lightened up, and a few more fonts added to the mix.

I've been reading some information about the game "Kings of Chaos (http://www.kingsofchaos.com/)", as it shares some traits with us (browser based war stuff - not GE). One thing I noticed in their Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_of_Chaos) was that last summer they started to get a lot of bots (scripters!) that were hurting the game. Their solution was to put captchas (image verification) in front of almost every action.

While I wouldn't go to that extreme, I see no reason why we shouldn't have an image verification in front of many actions (move, attack, convert resources, deposit money).

Any opinions about the new verification images or the Kings of Chaos captchas are welcome below...

I'd hold off on captchas everywhere. In all seriousness, I'd keep the architecture open except where painful processes are supposed to remain painful. In this way, you encourage the creation of third-party game-playing widgets that could make it onto the http://www.googleearthwarhacks.com/ site's discussion boards.

Seriously, though. Keep the architecture open. It'd be SO cool to have third party widgets making the play interesting. Someday you might have an API of your own, dude.
