This is a discussion thread for the following file:

Ames NASA Research Center, Mountain View, CA

Ames Research Center at Moffit Field, major NASA research center in the heart of Silicon Valley, CA. No space shuttles in evidence, unfortunately; nor can you really get a sense of how truly enormous those shuttle hangers are -- but they purportedly get their own weather formations inside!

Those aren't space shuttle hangars. The huge hangar on the left is a 1930s-era US Navy dirigible hangar that housed the USS Macon. The two hangars on the right are 1940s-vintage and housed blimps. Hangar One (the one on the left) was going to be converted to a space and sciences center, but this was put on hold when toxic chemicals were discovered in the paint. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moffett_Field for more information.
