There are some wonderful avatars here on GEH. My favorites?

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=19030&dateline=1126309757 My absolute favorite - I can watch this guy bob along for hours (OK, minutes, but he is too cool.)

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=45&dateline=1124437307 The avatar has a certain attitude, just like the person behind it :-)

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=137&dateline=1123458389 OK, I am biased, but it took me a week to figure out how to make a screen capture of the GEarth splash screen.

Continued - there appears to be a four image limit in posts:

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=2764&dateline=1124047914 I complemented this member on his/her avatar in a post last month.

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=3812&dateline=1126032488 Uh, what can you say about this avatar. It is different, that's for sure.

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=1520&dateline=1122802094 "Fly by night, away from here." One of my favorite Rush albums.

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=111&dateline=1124032861 Can't leave Mickey's wife out, can I?

And rounding out the top (at least my top) 12 avatars:

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=478&dateline=1121135159 Not so much the avatar, but the message. Does anybody still use I.E.?

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=797&dateline=1121678196 Great Photography Tara.

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=1668&dateline=1123266216 Whenever I see this symbol, I know a good posting will follow.

http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/image.php?u=11115&dateline=1125830701 Ok, it's dumb, but it makes me smile every time I see it.

Another avatar rich environment can be found at another vBulletin bulletin board site
Jazz Corner (http://www.jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/)

They were talking about Google Earth on one thread but it has taken a back seat to threads like:
Post an image in response to the previous image, part freakin' four (http://www.jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/showthread.php?t=6076)

I want to edit my profile etc. and choose an avatar. No standard avatars are available to download. It seems I can upload an avatar. What are the rules for the avatar upload; file type, size etc?
Thanks in advance for any help.

It's written in your UserCP:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 90 by 90 pixels or 24.4 KB (whichever is smaller).

Thanks Captain. Much appreciated. Is there a preferred file type; html, jpg, png, bmp, etc?

html as picture type? I don't think so. I'd prefer gif, jpg or png because bmp is uncompressed and probably to big (file size).
