hmm, played around a bit with tilting/angle. It IS indeed weird, 90 degrees down......and up........

yes it is a bridge. look at the shadow at the dam.
It seems that the bumpmaping doesnt work well in this case.

Obviously cars could not drive over such a bridge. It's a mapping glitch on an otherwise stunning high-res image of the Glen Canyon Dam. Too bad there isn't an equally high-res image of the Navajo Bridge some miles down the Colorado River. Yet ...

I think whats going on is the image is drapped over the terrain model (DEM- digital elevation model). Since bridges and other man made objects don't have a ground elevation, the picture of the bridge simply gets draped over the elevation of the bottom of the canyon.

Having driven over that bridge I can attest to the fact that it is just like any other bridge.
You can tell from the shadow that it is actually a flat roadway sitting on top of an arched truss structure that spans the canyon.
See the attached image for what it actually looks like from the ground level.
