The star that you see on the pavement of the taxiway at the airport is a compass rose. They are painted at most airports so that mechanics can take the airplane to a known point on the airport and perform a "compass swing." Because of electrical interference and metal materials used in aircraft, the compass doesn't always line up exactly where it should. A compass correction card must be displayed on the compass and usually reads something like "to steer 090 degrees turn to 092 degrees" or something like that. Good eye.
