Hi everyone!

Since the arrival of ESA's Mars Express at Mars in December 2003, Terabytes of high-resolution images have been taken of the Red Planet. (More info on Mars Express (http://sci.esa.int/marsexpress))

I downloaded some of the raw images, processed them and created a few new layers for Google Earth.

Click Here (http://www.florito.net/googleMars/GoogleMarsExample511_533_pr.gif) for a preview of how it will look in Google (animated gif)

If you enjoy this as well, do the following:

Disable all layers in Google Earth to avoid confusion
Download the general Mars Map here (http://www.florito.net/googleMars/MarsMOLA.kmz). (NASA map)
Download the image strip of orbit 511. High-res (http://www.florito.net/googleMars/MarsExpressOrbit511High.kmz) or Medium-res (http://www.florito.net/googleMars/MarsExpressOrbit511Half.kmz).
Download the image strip of orbit 533. High-res (http://www.florito.net/googleMars/MarsExpressOrbit533High.kmz) or Medium-res (http://www.florito.net/googleMars/MarsExpressOrbit533Half.kmz).
Open the downloaded files in Google Earth (file->open)

The colors were adjust manually. You will see some strange colouring, but I guess that is due to the fact that I am not a scientist..

Drop me a note if you find any alien lifeforms :P

Thanks Florito! this is awesome! If you like you can stick it in a folder in GE, save it as a .kmz, and submit it into our file archive (http://www.googleearthhacks.com/addfile.php)

And welcome to GEH! we hope you enjoy it here :D

..i forgot to tell you guys.

The images are taken with the HRSC (high resolution stereo camera), which means that if you view the two strips sideways (North facing left) with classic red-green 3D glasses (left eye=red, right eye=green) then you will see the landscape in 3D! (no joke)

Hey ppl,

While browsing to the scientific ESA pages (sci.esa.int (http://sci.esa.int)), I found a new thing called "window on Mars" with a new Mars Express image which you could overlay onto Google just like that.

Find it here (http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/object/index.cfm?fobjectid=38671)
