Altitude and length

How do i find out
a) the altitude of things
b) the length of things

I tried zooming in until i couldnt go any further to find a), but it wasnt accurate. B still eludes me though

a) There's a elevation scale at the bottom line to the right of lat/lon.
b) Tools -> Measure

(Or do i read you completely wrong?)
