Actually the monument is not exactly in the Equator, and the name MIDDLE OF THE WORLD is not real. (thimnking in coordenates), is only a point in the equator (actually near the equator)

I lived in Quito and I went there once or twice, Is just a monument for touristic pourposes, is not at the equator, the attractive of that place is the monument, and a lot of gift shops, going to the north, there is a mark saying" here is the real equator line".
I got pictures, soem day I can publish.

Nice TRY Ecuador Government, but GOOGLE EARTH revealed you now

I read it somewhere that when this monument was built they used the position of the sun and things like this to find the position of the line. It was long before GPS invention, so their calculations weren't so precise.

Interestingly, the monument of the Tropic of Capricorn in Ubatuba, Brazil doesn't match the line shown in Google Earth either.
